All about English courses in Montreal for foreigners — how to go and to choose a school and the program that suits your language needs.
Montreal is the most populous municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec that can proudly say it’s one of the few UNESCO Cities of Design. People flock to this beautiful place to visit its museums, The Notre Dame Cathedral, Clock Tower Beach and learn English in one of many well-reputed language schools (e.g. ILSC, Greystone College, ALI). Linguatrip.com shares with you the most popular courses among English learners from all over the world.
General English courses allow you to build confidence and improve your fluency through daily practice, dialogues, role-plays and guided conversations. You can choose from the different class options, like Assertiveness, Conversation, Discussion Circle, English Communication, Listening, Pronunciation, Public Speaking, Vocabulary, Listening for Professionals, etc. It doesn’t matter what level of English you have. General English is available at all levels from Elementary to Advanced.
Business English courses will suit individuals who pursue a career abroad or want to advance at home. Students learn business through listening, reading, speaking, writing alongside real case studies and current events. Topics include negotiating contracts, management and HR, branding and promotional strategies, project management and many more.
Intensive English is, probably, the most popular course among students as it offers daily full-time classes, special workshops, and interactive activities with group dynamics. Usually, the course consists of 20+ lessons per week in listening, speaking, reading and writing at the student's tested level.
University Pathway Program allows students to transfer into one of schools’ reputable partner colleges or universities without taking IELTS or TOEFL. During this program, students not only improve your language ability but also learn essay writing, research and presentation skills to help you succeed at the college or university level.
There are quite a few important things to know before going to Montreal as a language tourist. Here they are:
Visa. There are two types of visas:
Accommodation. There are three options of lodging available: stay with a host family, live in a school residence or find lodging independently.
Host family – stay with a Canadian family, breakfast and dinner included. Be ready to follow certain house rules, e.g. eating at a particular time, no guests allowed. Cost for two weeks: from 115 CAD.
School residence - stay in a student residence in a single room or with other mates. Cost for two weeks: from 680 CAD.
Independent lodging - you can rent accommodation in any part of Montreal. We recommend the well-reputed service Airbnb. There are more than 300 variants of flats and rooms. The cost for two weeks is from 45 CAD per night.
Food. If you like to cook yourself, it’s better to buy groceries in Whole Foods Market and IGA supermarkets. You can find them in every district of Montreal. For example, in IGA, apples cost 12 CAD per kilo, cheese – 3 CAD per pack, milk – 2 CAD, cookies – 3 CAD per pack.
Connectivity. 30 days is a minimal term of usage for a tourist SIM-card. If you are planning to stay in Canada for more than half a year, it’s better to buy a SIM-card from Telus, Rogers, Freedom Mobile and Bell providers. A standard monthly tariff rate is 45-60 CAD.
Money. Montreal is a city with lots of tourist attractions. Your must-see places should be Mont-Royal, St-Paul Street, Basilique Notre-Dame, Biodome and Mile End boutiques.
We recommend taking 1000-1200+ CAD for a two-week stay.
Learning English in Montreal is far more than mere language classes. The local people, the atmosphere and spectacular sights will make your language acquisition natural and easy. No matter what English background you have, what your age is and learning purposes are, you’ll definitely find the course catering for your needs.
