IH Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, España
Muy buena 4.5

Palma is historical and liberal, Spanish and cosmopolitan, nearly always sunny and always addictive.

The city of Palma is a fitting capital, not only of Mallorca, but also of the Balearic islands. Set in the beautiful bay of Palma, famous for its stunning sunsets, the city's most imposing site is the huge 13th century cathedral. This beautiful building is close to the 10th century Arab baths and is the gateway to the city's old quarter of narrow winding streets and ornate squares where orange and olive trees give shade to the many charming street cafés.

Part of Palma's charm is that it is also a very developed society. Its population of just over 300,000 is among the most diverse to be found in Spain. The Mallorcans themselves are descended from a mix that includes Spanish, Arabs and Carthaginians, and today they share their island with people from all over Spain and Europe, as well as with a substantial population of South American and African migrants. There is a lively arts scene and a nightlife to suit any taste. There is a large sailing community and the sailing year culminates every summer when the city hosts the Copa del Rey yachting competition.

International House Palma occupies all three floors of a modern, spacious building in the centre of Palma, just off the prestigious Passeig Mallorca avenue and a couple of minutes' walk from the old city.

IH Palma has its own street level entrance and reception, from where students can take the stairs to the classrooms. There are also toilet facilities and a classroom for facilities for learners with reduced mobility. The school occupies 3 floors of the building and has 14 air-conditioned classrooms, as well as a number of offices and recreational areas, including a computer lab which students are able to use either before or after class, and a chill-out area where learners can relax.

The whole third floor of the school is also an internet wireless hotspot, meaning that students may connect to the internet using their own computers or smartphones if they wish.

Intensive Group Courses MÁS POPULAR
De 16 años 6 alumnos en grupo 1 lección — 45 minutos
Course starts every Monday and is for all language levels
28 de agosto—8 de septiembre

Our intensive group Spanish courses in Palma consist of 4 hours tuition per day, from Monday to Friday.

Classes normally take place from 09.30 to 13.30, with a twenty-minute break for coffee taken halfway through the morning.

There is a maximum of 10 students per group and the minimum age for these courses is 16.

The main objective of most of our Spanish courses is to improve your communicative skills and so the emphasis of classroom activities is the development of your ability to speak and understand spoken Spanish.

Our intensive Spanish courses are offered at all levels from complete beginners to very advanced and the norm is for your classmates to be from all over the world, and not of a single nationality.

If you already have some knowledge of Spanish, you can start your course on any Monday.

In the weeks of April 6 and October 12 2015, our Spanish classes will start on the Tuesday.

Apartments in Palma

20 minutos desde la escuela con transporte
De 16 años
Sin comida

We have a number of furnished apartments available for rent that you can share with other students.

All apartments are centrally located and are therefore between 10-20 minutes from the school on foot or by public transport.

You normally have your own individual bedroom although some larger rooms are also available for two or more students. If you are travelling to Palma with friends or family you can therefore request to share a bedroom in an apartment. Apart from a bed (or beds) each bedroom also contains a desk and at least one wardrobe.

Each apartment also has a kitchen, bathroom and living room which you share. Facilities include a washing machine and TV. Some apartments also have telephones, but these are programmed to accept incoming calls only.

You are provided with sheets, blankets and towels, but you should bring your own beach towels. The apartments are cleaned once a week and bed linen is also changed weekly.

You are provided with a set of keys so that you can come and go when you please.

Note: We try to place students of the same age and sex together in the same apartment where possible. As this isn't always the case, however, if you do not want to share an apartment with people of different ages or sex, please make this very clear on the application form.

We ask you to sign a form which authorises the school to charge your credit card 200 euros in the event of any loss or damage to your accommodation. Alternatively you can leave a cash deposit with the school.

This deposit is refunded when the keys are returned but any loss or damage for which you are responsible will be deducted before the balance is returned.

Included: Meeting service on arrival at the apartment; weekly cleaning service; weekly change of bed linen and towels; utilities (water, gas and electricity).

Not included: Meals and use of telephone.

Shared rooms are available upon request for 2 people travelling together.

Spanish host family

20 minutos desde la escuela con transporte
De 16 años
Breakfast only/half board

Host family accommodation is available throughout the year. Most families live near the school and are rarely more than 20 minutes away by public transport.

All of our host families live in flats, as there are practically no individual houses in Palma. Apartment buildings (both old and modern) are rarely more than 8 floors high. A typical flat will have 3 or 4 bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a dining room and living room. Some flats have terraces; almost all of them have balconies.

It is difficult to describe a typical family as there is such a variety; some are young couples, some have children still living at home, others, perhaps the majority, have grown-up children who no longer live at home (but often appear for lunch on Sundays!). Lunch is usually eaten quite late (around 14.30) and dinner is usually about 21.00.

All host families are carefully selected by our Accommodation Department and all agree to fulfil the following conditions:

To provide you with a single room (unless a couple both attending courses or individuals request to share), which is comfortably furnished, has adequate heating and lighting facilities and a desk or table where you can work.

Not to accommodate students of the same nationality at the same time (unless you specifically request that).

To provide basic laundry facilities and to change bed linen and towels weekly.

To make a daily bath or shower available.

To provide an adequate continental breakfast and -- if you are being accommodated on a halfboard basis -- a substantial dinner at night.

To provide you with a door key so that you can let yourself in and out.

To treat you as a family guest and generally behave in a friendly and hospitable manner.

Shared rooms are available upon request for 2 people travelling together.

We also have a limited number of host families who live in larger apartments and who can also offer you your own private bathroom. These families will also undertake to do your washing and ironing. We therefore classify them as "Executive Families" and the higher prices we charge for these families reflect the extra services and facilities they provide.

Included: Exclusive use of a private bathroom; laundry and ironing service.

Not included: Use of telephone.

Shared rooms are available upon request for 2 people travelling together.
