Russian language has always been one of the most widely spoken languages in the whole world.

According to recent research, more than 500 million people speak Russian, making it the world`s third most commonly spoken language after Chinese (more than 1 billion speakers) and English (750 million). It is one of the official or working languages in many international organizations (e.g. UNO, UNESCO, IAEA, WHO, etc).

More and more students learn Russian as a second foreign language. A great deal of economists, managers, lawyers, artists, and those who take part in different international projects and have international contacts are interested in Russian language, Russian culture, and Russia itself. Although the number of specialized Russian language courses and Russian language schools is constantly increasing all over the world, it is most popular to study Russian in Russia.

It is widely accepted that the best way to master the language is to visit the country where it is spoken as the first language. Thus learning Russian language in Russia is without a doubt the best decision. With ceaseless communication with Russian native speakers on a wide range of topics, you`ll learn Russian in Russia in an easy and natural way.

The Russian language school was founded in 2003 with the participation of the National Pushkin Museum, the largest literary museum of Russia. Derzhavin Institute has already proved to be one of the best Russian language schools in St. Petersburg (Russia) of its kind. The school meets international quality standards. They are accredited by EAQUALS (Evaluation & Accreditation of Quality in Language Services). They are official TORFL testing center.

Close collaboration with the museum along with the care and attention given to students at our school by our qualified and experienced teaching staff contribute to a friendly and creative atmosphere. This ensures a deep immersion into both the Russian language and culture.

Their experienced and friendly staff of native Russian speakers can help you with your Russian visa, accommodation, bank account, academic matters and any problems students may face while studying in St. Petersburg.

Homestay

30 minutes from school on public transport
Minimum age — 18
Breakfast only/half board

Staying with a host family is a superb chance to maximize opportunities for language practice and master the understanding of Russian culture.

Our homestays are visited by our accommodation staff and monitored by the regular students` feedback. We have been working with most of the families from the very beginning. They have been chosen for their friendliness and the warm welcome they give to all the students.

Homestays are located in the historical districts of the city and can be from a 20-minute walk to a 30-minute ride to the Institute. All the homestays are conveniently located to public transportation links.

Students can select a single or, if booking with a friend, a shared room. Rooms are furnished with a bed (or a sofa-bed), a desk, a wardrobe or a set of drawers. Bathroom facilities are in most cases shared with the family. Light laundry, towels and bed linen are provided once a week. There might be other students living with the same host family either from the Institute or from other language schools (especially during the high season). Yet we try not to place another student speaking the same language unless requested.

As the homestay accommodation is mostly chosen to improve the language through constant communication in Russian, we ask our hosts not to speak other languages apart from Russian. But, if requested, we can place the student in a family with speakers of English, German, French or other languages.

Students can choose a homestay with half-board or breakfast only. Usually a continental breakfast is served – cereal/toasts/yogurt, tea or coffee. Dinner usually consists of soup or a main dish of fish or meat. Living in a family differs from living in a hotel and eating in restaurants. Students are usually offered the same food as the hosts eat every days. Though families are usually eager to meet your dietary requirements in case you are a vegetarian or allergic to some food – just state your preferences in the enrollment form and talk to your hosts when you arrive. Please pay attention, that it can be rather difficult to find some special dietary foods in Saint-Petersburg, so in case if you need some special products (gluten-free, lactose-free etc.), you should buy them yourself or bring them with you.

Students staying with a host family will be given the keys to the flat, but they are usually not supposed to invite their guests and are asked to be back by midnight in order not to disturb the family.

For students who want to be more independent or who have very specific requirements we can offer other types of accommodation, also available all year round.

excellent

I arrived to St. Petersburg with the equivalent of one year of Russian at a university. Hardly able to construct a complete sentence without glaring gramattical errors, my pronunciation was practically incomprehensible and my vocabulary severely limited. My progress from incompetence, to competence, to confidence over the past six months has been an exciting journey. Derzhavin Institute deserves much of the credit for my progress.

Derzhavin's qualtity of instruction and unique atmosphere make it an extrodinary place to study Russian. After my entry tests, the staff and teachers here actively sought to meet my needs as a historian who aspired to competence in reading on historical themes. Rather than relying on one standard textbook, my teacher has ingeneously compiled a breadth of materials related to history and current events, yet she has made certain that I master the fundamentals of conversational Russian. Moreover, her incredible talent of listening intently and correcting regurally but tactfully has empowered me to become confident in conversation at a speed that surprised me. Far more so than any language teacher I have ever had in the past, my teacher at Derzhavin posesses the rare gift of insisting the student use the appropriate grammar without ever stifling the student's desire to explore new manners of speech.

Located in the historical mansion of the famous eighteenth-century Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin, the atmosphere within the Institute is imbued with the feeling of the Russian past. Moreover, from celebrating birthdays to having conversations with students during the breaks between classes, the teachers and admistrators actively seek to create a unique environment where students benefit from conversing in Russian with the entire community of teachers, students, and administrators. Derzhavin's demand that the students speak in Russian helps make students become more confident with their respective levels of competence. I am aware of many language schools where it is the norm for students to begin immediately speaking English after class concludes. Moreover, in some language schools, students have little interaction with teachers outside of class. At Derzhavin, on the other hand, learning continues well beyond the time set for lessons.

After spending six months here, I cannot imagine studying Russian anywhere else. Derzhavin is truly a unique place and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who desires to study Russian in St. Petersburg.
